Finding Your Inner Creative

15 July 2020
Finding Your Inner Creative - july hoy

While being creative might not come as naturally to some as what it does to others, this does not mean that some people are incapable of being creatives. Creativity is a skill that can be learnt – it’s just a matter of starting.

Take a look at your schedule and allocate some time to becoming more creative. Not only will you start feeling more relaxed, but you could also pick up on a new hobby or two.

Here are 7 easy ways to help you find your inner creative:

1. Surround Yourself with Creative People

When you start a new job, you receive training from people who are experts in the field who guide you towards doing the job correctly.

Becoming creative is no different: if you want to become more creative, you need to be trained in developing a more creative mindset and what better way to do so than by surrounding yourself with other creative individuals?

Not only will you learn a thing or two but you will expose yourself to a whole new way of thinking. Ask questions, challenge ideas, contribute ideas of your own – this is all a part of expanding the creative process.

2. Work on Being More Creative

Becoming more creative will not happen overnight. Just as with any skill, it takes time to perfect and polish. Just as you set aside time to go to the gym, allocate an hour to doing something creative.

This can be anything from writing a short piece, doing some sketching, baking or even learning how to play a musical instrument. Search your interests and do not think – just do!

If you’re not quite ready to dive into the deep end, watch some video tutorials on YouTube or read a book about a creative subject that interests you.

3. Music for the Soul

Between business meetings, conferences, lengthily reports and the general daily hustle there is little opportunity to squeeze in the time for the things that we enjoy.

However, music is something that is generally enjoyed by everyone and, thanks to the wonders of technology, is also easily accessible.

Create a YouTube playlist to access from the office, listen to the radio while cooking dinner, or create a Spotify account on your phone. Listening to music is not only soothing but can really get the creative juices pumping.

Have you ever stopped and listened to the lyrics of your favourite song? Understanding the reasoning behind the creativity of others is one way to boost your own.

4. Find the Best Time to Be Creative

Trying to be creative while being swamped with work reports and meetings might not be the moment when your creative juices are at their peak.

However, once you’ve had a soothing bath at home and are feeling more relaxed your body will be more receptive to generate more creative ideas.

In short: if you’re frustrated you will not be able to force your creativity. Find a time of the day where you are able to relax and empty your mind. When your mind is empty, it can be filled with creative thoughts.

5. Do Not Be Afraid of Being Bored

We are constantly trying to fill our schedules to keep as busy as possible. But, in truth, there is nothing wrong with finding a moment in your day where you have nothing planned or scheduled.

Being bored is the perfect opportunity for honing your creativity. This is a time where you can explore new creative avenues, go for a walk, write down ideas or simply relax. Stepping away from technology and the norm will help you to step into a new creative zone.

6. A New Perspective

People become so accustomed to seeing the world from one viewpoint that trying to see a different perspective can be very difficult. Think about what you believe in, the way that you see certain things and challenge these philosophies.

Make a list of foods that you do not like, places that you did not enjoy visiting or opinions that you have disagreed with – try and see these ideas from a new perspective and perhaps you will find that you do actually like them after all.

7. Break the Habit

While having a routine can be comforting, it does not allow much room for creativity to enter your life. Disrupting a routine can be difficult to adjust to so start small: instead of driving yourself to work, get a lift with a co-worker. Instead of shopping by one supermarket every day, consider visiting another one.

The world is filled with new and unique experiences and if you are constantly stuck in the same routine, all of these experiences will simply pass you by.
