Kid-friendly recipes so that the little ones can also spoil their moms!

There are few things that satisfy hunger more than mom’s cooking, but Mother’s Day is there to treat your mom in a very special way. Instead of taking her out to a fancy restaurant, why not make her some delicious food throughout the day?

We have chosen something for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert that’s easy enough for kids to make for their moms (with a little bit of dad’s help for the younger ones). Take a look at the menu we chose that will not only be easy to cook, but will impress your mom and make her feel like a queen!

Breakfast – Heart-shaped Egg in Toast

Your mom will adore this gesture of love! This breakfast is cute and extremely easy to make – just make sure you have a heart-shaped cookie cutter and you’re sorted!

How to Make It:

  1. Use the cookie cutter to cut a heart out in the middle of a thick slice of bread.
  2. In a pan, melt some butter on low heat and add the slice of bread and the heart cut-out.
  3. Flip the bread over and crack open an egg in the middle of the heart-shaped hole in the toast.
  4. Cook until the egg is fully cooked, remove from pan and serve it up.

Butter the heart cut-out and add it to the side of the dish so that your mom can indulge and dip it into the egg yolk!

Lunch – Tortilla Pizza

If you’re planning an afternoon excursion with your mom this Mother’s Day, we’ve taken that into account! A tortilla pizza makes for a lovely lunch without skimping on the flavour. It’s also super quick to make! Dads or an older sibling might need to help the little ones with the oven.

How to Make It:

  1. Spread some tomato paste onto a tortilla wrap.
  2. Top it with some salt and pepper and cheese (whichever cheese you prefer).
  3. Top it with chopped red onion and some beef strips or smoked chicken.
  4. Add some more cheese to the top.
  5. Put the tortilla pizza in the oven at 180°Cand cook until cheese has melted and tortilla is crispy. This will take more or less 3 – 4 minutes.

This is the ultimate light lunch and also a healthier, lighter alternative to pizza!

Dinner – Prawn, Peas and Pesto Pasta Dish

This is a healthy, tasty and oh-so-fulfilling dish to treat your mom to this Mother’s Day. If she would prefer, you could make it even healthier by cooking some brown or whole-wheat pasta! Either way, this dinner is quick, easy and suitable for all ages to cook.

How to Make It:

  1. Boil and cook some pasta or linguine in a pot. If you’re too young to monitor when the pasta is cooked, ask Dad or an older sibling for some help.
  2. While the pasta is cooking, fry some prawns in pesto.
  3. Add in the frozen peas at the last minute so that they keep their colour and an element of crisp to them.
  4. Once the pasta is cooked, dish it up in a pasta bowl.
  5. Add the prawns in pesto and peas and toss so that it’s all mixed evenly. You can add more pesto according to your preferred taste.

This recipe is bound to impress your mom, but make sure she doesn’t enjoy it too much - she still needs to save space for dessert!

Dessert – Fairy Cupcakes

These cupcakes require a few more ingredients, but they’re so tasty and so much fun for kids to try their hands at baking with, that we decided on this recipe. This is definitely something for the little ones to try out and help their moms with!

Ingredients:

  • 110g butter or margarine
  • 110g castor sugar
  • 110g self-raising flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons milk

For the icing:

  • 300g icing sugar
  • 2 – 3 tablespoons water
  • 2 – 3 drops of food colouring
  • Decorations such as hundreds and thousands

How to Make It:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Cream the butter and sugar until smooth and add eggs and vanilla essence.
  2. Fold in the flour. Add milk slowly until the mixture is smooth. Spoon mixture into cupcake tray.
  3. Bake for 8 – 10 minutes. Take them out of oven and set aside to cool down.
  4. To make the icing, mix the icing sugar and water until smooth and add the food colouring.
  5. Once the cupcakes have cooled down, drizzle the icing over them and decorate. Wait for the icing to harden before serving them.

And there you have it – a hearty, tasty menu that you can cook for your mother on this special day. Whether it’s by yourself, assisted by your father, or even cooked with your mom, she will appreciate being the one who is treated and spoilt on Mother’s Day.
