Braai Recipes for Heritage Day -  bamboo skewered

Over the years, Heritage Day on 24thSeptember has also become celebrated as National Braai Day. While countries all over the world have ‘barbecues’, there’s just nothing that beats a good old South African braai.

Heritage Day comes just at the right time too – with spring in the air, we can use this day to embrace the warmer weather by sitting by the fire with friends and family, while braaing some delicious food.

We at House of York have picked out some easy and tasty braai recipes for you to try this National Braai Day.

Bamboo-skewered Coriander and Apricot Chicken

With chicken being such a versatile meat for dishes, we just had to include a chicken braai recipe in here for you.


  • 4 chicken breasts, cut into cubes - 125ml apricot jam
  • 45ml coriander/basil leaves, chopped - 10ml grated fresh ginger
  • 2 crushed garlic cloves - 1 red chilli, finely chopped
  • 12ml fresh orange juice - 60ml lemon juice
  • 60ml soya sauce - 10ml ground coriander
  • Pinch of salt


  1. In a large bowl, mix all of the above ingredients together.
  2. Add your chicken cubes to the marinade mixture and coat them evenly in the marinade.
  3. Leave the marinated chicken in the fridge for an hour or 2.
  4. When you’re ready to braai, take your chicken cubes out the fridge and place them onHouse of York bamboo skewers to make some delicious sosaties.
  5. Braai the chicken over hot coals.
  6. Sprinkle with fresh coriander leaves to serve.

T-Bone Steak with Mustard and Tomato Butter

You don’t get more South African than throwing a juicy T-Bone steak on the braai! Take a look at this easy recipe from Food24.


  • T-Bone steaks - Beef braai marinade (any)
  • Braai spice - Salt and Pepper

Ingredients for the butter

  • Store-bought garlic butter, soft - 1 tbsp grainy mustard
  • 3 finely chopped sundried tomatoes


  1. Marinade the steaks on aHouse of York butcher’s block and keep them in the fridge for about 3 hours.
  2. While they are marinating, combine the butter ingredients, mix well and put it in the fridge.
  3. Braai the steak over very hot coals until they are cooked to your preference.
  4. Once cooked, put a dollop of the flavoured butter over the steak so that it melts.

Linefish on the Braai

Fish being smoked on the braai just has a really delectable taste to it. Try this easy recipe and impress your friends this National Braai Day.


  • 1kg fish (Kingklip or Yellowtail work best) - 2 lemons
  • 1 tomato - ½ red onion
  • Salt and pepper - 3 tbsp butter
  • 25g chopped chives - 2 garlic cloves
  • Heavy duty foil to wrap the fish in.


  1. Lay two layers of foil down and melt the butter with the garlic. Once melted, rub the garlic butter on the foil. Use the rest of it to coat the fish.
  2. Place the fish on the foil, slice your lemon and tomato into thin slices and place them on top of the fish.
  3. Use the juice of the lemon and ½ cup of water to coat the fish.
  4. Sprinkle the chives, salt and pepper over the fish.
  5. Cover the fish with the foil and cook over medium coals. Cook your fish according to the thickness of the fillet.
  6. You will know your fish is completely cooked when the meat flakes away easily.

Classic Macaroni Salad

Every braai needs to have the perfect side dish – and with the weather starting to warm up in spring, what better side dish to have than a nice, cold pasta salad? This appetising salad is a classic and is the perfect dish to serve in ourHouse of York bamboo bowls.


  • 4 cups of uncooked macaroni - 1 cup of mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup of distilled vinegar - 2/3 cup of sugar
  • 2 ½ tbsp yellow mustard - 1 ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper - 1 chopped onion
  • 2 chopped celery stalks - 1 chopped green pepper


  1. Lightly salt some boiling water in a pot and cook the macaroni. This usually takes between 8 – 10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the ingredients together.
  3. Add the macaroni to the bowl of ingredients and mix.
  4. Put the bowl in the fridge for about 4 hours before serving.
