7 Habits of a Successful Woman

7 Habits of a Successful Woman - august hoy

The meaning of success is different to every woman. Do you define success as earning a large salary, getting the promotion of your dreams, keeping your family happy and healthy or just making it to the end of the week without disaster striking?

Perhaps success is a combination of all these factors, and more, but the takeaway is that everyone has their own list of what they want to achieve in order to consider themselves ‘successful’.

Here are 7 habits that you should practice in order to achieve your goals and become a successful woman.

1. Make Time for Yourself

Not the first habit you would have expected? Then this emphasizes even more why it is an important habit to perfect. There are only 24 hours in each day and most of the time it is never enough.

There is nothing wrong with giving a lot of yourself to your work or to your family but at some point, you need to give some time to yourself. Constantly trying to do everything perfectly will leave you feeling stressed out and unsettled.

This is why it’s important to allocate some “me-time” to yourself every day. Whether it’s some time to read, relax in a warm bath or to catch up on some Netflix is up to you.

2. Minimise the Workload

While you might feel the need to answer all those emails, head to the meetings, have lunch with the client, keep the house clean, get to your child’s hockey game, make a fancy dinner and a million other things there is one important thing to learn: you cannot do everything.

If you’re the type of person with a can-do attitude, you might say that you can and already are doing all this. But there is a difference between doing everything and doing it properly. Just because you are able to mark everything off your to-do-list does not mean that you have done it successfully.

Break down what you need to do every day and choose the three most important tasks and focus on those. Once you have finished that, take on another task. This allows you to focus entirely on one thing at a time without spreading yourself too thin. Some days work will win other days your personal life will. Balance is key to being successful.

3. Never Stop Learning

This does not mean that you need to go back to university and get a degree, unless that is something that you want to do. Learning can be as simple as watching the news at night, reading the newspaper during lunch or watching some TED talks before bed.

We do not learn to just become smarter, we learn to become more enabled, knowledgeable and informed. You never know when a random fact of knowledge you gained will come in handy when networking or when offering your child some advice.

Knowledge is power and power is success. Find out what you are interested in learning about and buy a book, do some Internet research or watch a documentary. Add block you place leads you one step closer to success.

4. Take Care of Your Health

We grew up understanding ‘health’ to refer to our physical condition, i.e.: eating enough fruit and vegetables, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, avoiding junk food, etc.

While all of these are important to living a healthy lifestyle, they are not the is-all and end-all of a healthy lifestyle. Being healthy also refers to your mental and emotional wellbeing.

If there are people in your life that are straining your mental and emotional wellbeing, then it is time to reconsider who you choose to spend your time around. If your career is placing too much pressure on you then perhaps it is time to consider a career change.

Do not allow variables to become constants in your life because it feels right. Your life is in your hands – steer it in the direction that you want to go.

5. Celebrate your Achievements

You will never be successful until you learn to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments. Do not become so obsessed with the moon that you forget about the stars along the way.

There is nothing wrong with having high expectations for yourself but never giving yourself recognition for the small wins along the way will not help you on your path to success.

Did you land a new client? Celebrate with your favourite dinner. You managed to get all your work done this week? Have a glass of wine to celebrate. An accomplishment will never be an achievement until you choose to recognize it as such.

6. Make Time for Others

Don’t become so self-involved that you forget about those around you. Make time to visit friends and family. Even introverts need time to replenish their social meters and you cannot do that without socializing.

A successful woman recognizes the need to help other people. Sometimes helping others with their problems gives you a break from your own.

Never underestimate the power of meeting new people and making connections. Networking can open up a whole new avenue of opportunities – all you need to do is make the time to so.

7. Don’t Forget to Smile

Have you ever walked down the street and had a stranger smile at you? This small action can make you feel important and powerful. A smile is the most powerful weapon in any woman’s arsenal – wear yours proudly.

Treating others with respect, offering a smile and a kind word goes a long way. Once you start doing this you will notice that people will start treating you the same.

A little bit of kindness goes a long way.
