National Braai Day a day when South Africans unite together by lighting up their fires to celebrate our beautiful nation’s heritage. This Braai Day we wanted to inspire you with a few easy but tasty recipes. With that in mind, House of York has put together the ultimate Braai Day recipe guide, because having great braai recipes on the menu is always important.

Have a look at a few easy and delicious recipes ALL done on the braai (well except the mushroom side dish).

Tasty Starter | Grilled Brie – Topped with strawberries and drizzled with balsamic

This tasty starter is not only super easy but also looks fantastic on a platter.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole brie
  • ¼ cup olive oil, divided
  • 1 cup, copped strawberries
  • 1 French baguette, sliced
  • 2 tbsp. thinly sliced basil
  • 2 tbsp. balsamic glaze

Directions

  1. Place cheese on a large piece of foil. Drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil. Top the cheese with strawberries, then fold foil to cover the cheese completely.
  2. Brush baguette slices with remaining olive oil.
  3. Place the foil wrapped brie and baguette on the braai and grill the cheese until melted, about 5-10 minutes. Flip the baguette slices as they turn golden brown and transfer toasted pieces to a platter.
  4. Drizzle balsamic glaze over the melted, grilled brie and sprinkle basil on top. Enjoy with grilled bread.

Delicious Main | Steak Fajita Skewers

This Steak Skewer is a complete game changer with the added tortillas.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. sirloin steak, cut into large cubes
  • 1 bunch green onions, cut into thirds
  • 1 pack small flour tortillas, torn into large pieces
  • 4 large bell peppers, cut into large pieces
  • 8 skewers, soaked in water for 20 minutes
  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Skewer the steak, scallions, tortillas (folded), and peppers. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Place onto the braai and turn occasionally, until steak is medium-rare and the vegetables are tender and slightly charred, about 7 minutes.

Splendid Side Dish | Stuffed Mushrooms with Ricotta, Pesto and Grilled Haloumi

This side dish is perfect for a braai and not only is it super simple, but also a great way to use up leftovers.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup pine nuts
  • 150h halloumi
  • ¾ cup reduced fat ricotta
  • 4 tbsp. basil pesto
  • 5 large Portobello mushrooms

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 180C.
  2. Heat a pan over medium heat and fry the pine nuts until fragrant and toasted. In the same pan fry the sliced halloumi for about one minute on each side. Cut the halloumi into cubes once cool enough to handle.
  3. Prepare the pesto and ricotta in a small bowl.
  4. Arrange the mushrooms in a baking dish and stuff them with the pesto and ricotta mix. Top with halloumi cubes and sprinkle generously with pine nuts. Bake for 20 minutes.

Sweet Treat | Grilled Pineapple Sundaes

A delicious sweet treat and to celebrate in true Braai Day spirit, this dish is done on the braai!

Ingredients

  • 4 pineapple slices
  • 4 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • Dulce de leche, for drizzling – find the recipe here.
  • 2tbsp sweetened shredded coconut, toasted

Directions

  1. Grill pineapple until charred, 1 minute per side.
  2. Top with vanilla ice cream and drizzle with dulce de leche or caramel. Top with shredded coconut and serve immediately.
