Creating a stylish luxurious feel to your home needn’t require costly expenses and hiring of helpers. Create a personalized style and feel by knuckling down and doing it yourself (with the help of House of York, of course).

Many of us find it relaxing and therapeutic to involve ourselves in rearranging and customizing our homes to suit style and comfort. And what is the most important goal in creating a home – definitely comfort.

So with this said, why not be a DIY expert in your home? Get the whole family involved and participate in this by making it a family exercise. Involve the kids and create a mood board of colors and textures that you’d like in a space such as the family lounge. By involving the family, it may be a bit easier to encourage them to help tidy or de-clutter the space when things become messy during weekends or school holidays because they played a role in creating this new area. Just keep in mind that some bold colour ideas may arise from a family mood board…

Start with the colour of the walls around the house. Colour plays a vital role in emotions and moods, with bright colours creating a sense of creativity and vibrancy. Add a pop of colour to an area that needs a lift, even if it’s a small wall space. Wallpaper is another great option when creating a focus wall. Just imagine a beautiful wallpaper design of your choice on the wall in the lounge that you’ve always wanted to use as a feature. Now add House of York décor cubes to house your favourite art deco vase and family photos. We’re sure you can picture it and isn’t it beautiful?

Small changes – such as wallpaper on one wall with a few décor cubes or floating shelving units – can create the warm and inviting space needed to revive a tired space. Old cabinets can be given a new lease on life through a fresh coat of paint; you could even remove the doors and use House of York floating shelves inside the unit to create a more unique and modern open storage look. For a shabby chic look, add a House of York A-frame racking unit and the vintage appeal will be complete. Exhibit your family photos, art projects or even décor on this adjustable unit.

House of York décor products are available in raw pine to allow your own paint or colour choice, as well as butterscotch, mahogany, dark wood and white wash. You could even cover a raw pine item in custom vinyl (similar to wallpaper). The possibilities are endless once you start researching ideas.

You could even focus on your soft furnishings instead of the walls by giving your couches a facelift. Cover them with a throw – this is both functional and decorative. The dog’s mucky footprints can be washed from the throw, while the colour adds to the feel of the room. Add a new cushion cover or two, a House of York magazine rack, display stand and A-frame racking unit and you’d be amazed at the difference!

Tips for DIY projects:

  • If you are new to DIY projects, start small i.e. paint a display unit for your lounge before attempting the cabinet and floating shelves.
  • If you are working on a project in the bathroom, don’t start this project late in the day – if something goes wrong, service providers charge more to come out at night to assist with a broken water pipe or electrical fault.
  • If you are unsure of any water or electrical issues, call the professionals. It may just save time and money if things go wrong.
  • Ensure that you have the correct safety equipment i.e. safety glasses when hammering nails into a wall to hang a display unit or a ladder that locks into place to maintain your balance while painting a ceiling etc.
  • Do your research by making sure you know exactly what you want to achieve and what the steps are to get there. Work according to a plan.
  • Remember to take photos of the space before you begin with the changes. It’s always fun to look back at what was (and to share with House of York on our Facebook page)!

Enjoy the process of improving your home. It is, after all, your castle. Make it your own through fun and creative projects. And remember to share your projects with us – we would love to see the changes you have made in your home.
