2019 Décor Trends & How to Implement Them in Your Home - decor trends

2019 is set to be a year of significant change as far as interior décor trends go. Many homeowners have long since adopted a minimalist approach to their décor, but now we are seeing a revolutionary shift towards maximalism. In comparison to minimalism’s “less is more”, maximalism’s philosophy is “more is more”. If you’re looking to make some changes to your living space, here is our selection of top décor trends to consider and a few examples of how to implement them in your own home.

Bold Colours

One of the biggest décor trends to look out for this year is the use of rich, bold colours. According to Pantone, the leading forecaster of global colour trends, there will be a strong desire to use “joyful hues that lend themselves to playful expressionism.” Colours that not only lift our spirits but that encourage creativity and inspire confidence.

Pantone has identified 12 standout colours, including the vibrant Jester Red, Pink Peacock, Living Coral, Princess Blue and Mango Mojito, which are complemented by four classic neutrals: Soybean, Eclipse, Sweet Corn and Brown Granite. Alongside White, these neutral colours will serve as the perfect foundation upon which to experiment with bolder hues. In sum, 2019 is definitely the year to make adventurous colour choices!

Implement this trend in your home by countering neutral furniture or walls with bold statement pieces such as colourful cushions, linen, wall art or floral arrangements. You may also invest in colourful chairs or couches, wall paint or wallpaper if you’re ready to take that plunge. Click here for the list of trendy colours to experiment with.

Creative Combinations

Expect to see a lot of layering this year. This includes the mixing and matching of different colours, patterns, materials, shapes and styles. One such example is the juxtaposed combination of velvet upholstery with knitted throws. A variety of textures help add depth and drama to an otherwise ordinary space but with that said, there is a fine line between maximalism and clutter. The key is to maintain one main ‘theme’ for the room so that all the differing elements work in harmony with another.

The mixing of different metals can also help guide the eye from a room’s dominant colour to its accent colours. According to, one warm-coloured metal (such as brass, copper or gold), should be used alongside one cool metals (such as aluminium, stainless steel or silver). For example, if your kitchen has stainless steel appliances, you can add brass cabinet handles for a pop of warm colour.

Transparent Materials

Get ready to pair lively colours and curious combinations with transparent materials such as acrylic or glass. These see-through materials will allow your vibrant décor pieces to be the focus of everyone’s attention. Besides adding a playful yet chic touch, they also make small spaces feel more open, bright and airy. Some fantastic ways to implement this trend in your home is to use clear acrylic shelves, glass coffee tables or acrylic picture frames which let your photos do all the talking.
