5 Ways to Decorate your Home with Ultra Violet, the 2018 Pantone Colour of the Year

2018 Pantone Color of the Year

At House of York, we keep a keen eye on international styles and design trends so there was much anticipation in our office as we eagerly awaited Pantone’s annual ‘Colour of the Year’ announcement.

Pantone’s Colour of the Year represents a period in time and provides strategic direction for designers and brands the world over. This year’s winner? Ultra Violet - a mystical, blue-based purple shade that points us toward the future. According to Pantone, Ultra Violet symbolises “experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world and push boundaries through creative outlets.”

We invite you to incorporate this inventive and imaginative colour into your home décor this year and, to inspire you, we’ve outlined five different ways you can do so.

1. Painted features

This idea is as easy as the swish of a paintbrush. Areas you might consider giving a lick of Ultra Violet paint include a feature wall in one of your living rooms, bedroom or bathroom, or even the front door. Because Ultra Violet is tied to the vast and limitless night sky, you may also consider painting a starry night sky mural which would work particularly well in a nursery or children’s bedroom.

2. Pops of colour

Not yet ready to commit to something as permanent as paint? Test Ultra Violet out with your bedroom linen or living room décor such as sofa pillows, throws, rugs or vases. Because Pantone’s Colour of the Year has such a profound effect on the world of design, you’re sure to come across Ultra Violet statement pieces at local home stores within the coming months.

3. Furniture

Whether it’s a violet-coloured cupboard, chair or headboard, furniture can be a great way to welcome Pantone’s Colour of the Year into your own home. If it proves tricky to get your hands on the right colour furniture piece from your local home store, you may consider going the DIY route by purchasing the materials you need to upscale existing furniture to give them that Ultra Violet touch.

4. Fresh elements

Combine whimsical Ultra Violet with some fresh greenery and you’re on to a real winner. Fresh flowers that will work well include hydrangeas, irises or violets. Be sure to place them in a clear or white vase so that the colour pops extra nicely.

5. Toned lighting

Did you know that purple-toned lighting is used in meditation spaces to help energize people and inspire connection? Whether it's through string lights in your entertainment area or violet-coloured lampshades, consider using accent lighting to bring out the best that this year’s top colour has to offer.
