For most of us our home is the only place that makes us feel safe and secure – it’s our sanctuary. In most cases however, we are fooled into thinking that luxury comes at a hefty price which creates the illusion that it takes a lifetime to accomplish.

The perception of style being expensive is beginning to change. You can have a stylish space on a budget, making your home liveable in a practical way especially if there are little ones running around. In order to enforce the feeling of peace in your home, the first rule of thumb is to de-clutter your living space, allowing a free flow of energy throughout the house.

De-cluttering does have a few rules which will benefit those who tend to hoard items to the detriment of what should be your sanctuary. Firstly go through each room, forming three different piles for items. The "Save” pile will be for the items you definitely want to keep; the "Donate” pile will be for the items you don’t need anymore, but that could be used by someone else and the "Fix” pile will be for the items that could still be used around the home but need some attention.

Once you’ve created these piles and sorted the items, it would be a good idea to decide on additional storage space should this be a need. House of York has a wide range of shelving units, décor cubes and display units to simplify your storage. These storage units are not only functional but also add a touch of elegance to a room to show décor items, special artworks or even your favourite books.

Once you’ve turned your room into the sanctuary that it should be, focus should be placed on the kitchen as it’s a room often overlooked because of its functional aspects. Do the same clearing exercise in the kitchen – you may even unearth items you haven’t seen in ages or even used. These could definitely clear up space for new accessories that may even add to the décor in the room. Create a more energetic and creative space by adding a splash of colour and by bringing in bamboo items such as storage canisters and bowls; you could even show your beautiful tea sets or coffee mugs by housing them in a House of York décor cube on the coloured focus wall!

Whether they be small changes or big changes, any attempt at decluttering and opening up space for peaceful living is a positive move forward. And after all the hard work sorting items, why not indulge in a chocolate treat? Try these amazing recipes
