House of York’s Day of Kindness
Easter weekend has come and gone, but House of York managed to make a difference in some people’s lives that weekend.
On Saturday, 19th April, a team of us paid a visit to Erica D, which is an informal settlement near St Albans on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth.
Our day of kindness was organised by Craig Duffield, who has been involved in uplifting this community for over 4 years. Craig is a part of Mosaic Tourism, which is linked to Mosaic Life – a non-profit humanitarian organisation that focuses on impacting impoverished communities and positively changing lives.
To date, the Extreme Shack Makeover has seen six Wendy houses being provided for members of the community. This replaces their existing, run-down shacks. A seventh one is going to be built there in the first week of May – providing stable housing for even more community members.
Our mission there for the day was to sand down the Wendy houses and re-varnish them. The labour was intense – but well rewarded and worth it all in the end. Some of the community members even stepped in to help us sand down their own houses, as well as help others who were unable to do so. It was a truly fruitful experience.
